May tHPI: Vancouver and Madrid see the biggest month-on-month increases in hotel prices
Düsseldorf, Germany – 8 May 2019 – Hotel prices increase in May 2019 across Europe, with the average rate for a standard double room rising in the majority of European cities listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), reported by global hotel metasearch trivago.com
Vancouver sees this month’s sharpest rise in hotel prices on the tHPI, with its average rate for a standard double room increasing 27% from last month to reach €173 per night. The city with the largest month-on-month hotel price increase in Europe reported on the tHPI in May is Madrid, where travelers will pay €129 on average for an overnight stay in a standard double room this month, a 26% increase compared to last month. Athens follows with a 17% increase compared to April, with its average hotel price now at €111 per night. Average hotel prices in Dublin increase as well, rising 16% this month compared to last to reach €161 for a standard double room per night. Lisbon and Brussels report month-on-month increases of 9% and 8%, respectively, which translate into €108 for a night in a standard double room in the Portuguese capital and€107 for one in the Belgian capital. Amsterdam and Istanbul, by contrast, report this month’s most significant decreases in hotel prices listed for Europe: the cities’ average rates are down 12% and 5%, respectively, falling to €63 for a standard double room per night in Amsterdam and to €175 for one in Istanbul. Year-on-year comparison in hotel prices
Most cities listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index register a year-on-year increase in their hotel prices this May. The average overnight rate for a standard double room in Manila is now €84, a 71% increase compared to May 2018, making it the city with the highest year-on-year hotel price increase this month. In second place is Delhi, reporting a 35% year-on-year increase, which translates into €60 for a standard double room per night. Mumbai holds the third place, registering an increase of 24% compared to May last year with an average rate of €77 for an overnight hotel stay. Completing the list of the five cities registering the highest year-on-year increases this May are Madrid, where the average rate of €129 is 23% higher compared to last year, and Lima, where the average price of €62 is up 22% from May 2018. In contrast, Lisbon sees an 18% decrease in its hotel rates compared to May 2018, which translates into an average of €108 for an overnight hotel stay this month, making it the city with the most significant year-on-year drop in hotel prices. Reykjavík follows with a decrease in hotel prices for an overnight stay of 15% compared to last year, which translates into €120 on average for a standard double room. Barcelona reports a 10%, decrease in its hotel prices compared to May last year, meaning travelers will pay €125 on average for an overnight stay in a standard double room. Dubai and Athens complete the list of the cities with the most significant decreases in hotel prices this month compared to May 2018. In Dubai, travelers will pay €130, a decrease of 9%. Athens also reports a decrease in hotel prices of 9% on a year-on-year comparison, which translates into €111 for a standard double room per night.
